MILF: Getting Lost (and found) with Emilie de Ravin

Chances are, you’ve seen Emilie de Ravin on screen at many points in the past twenty years. From her start as Tessa in Roswell to her infamous sojourn as pregnant (and new mama) Claire on the “Island” also known as Lost to Rob Pattison’s lover in Remember Me and (up until last year) as Belle of the ball in Once Upon A Time, Ravin has been many roles but none as transformative than her new role of mom…of two adorable little monsters.  Below she shares how she approaches being a working parent after over two decades in the industry, hacks on how to get your kiddos drinking green juice (it CAN happen), plus her desert isle — no pun intended — must haves for mum and babe.

You’ve been an actress for nearly twenty years! Do you find working in the industry (late nights, etc.) prepped you for becoming a mama?

Never really thought about that but yes, I assume it helped a little since film and tv hours are literally all over the place & schedules are constantly changing! Good practice for the unexpected being thrown at you! And side note: nearly twenty years…wow, thats crazy. Time really does fly!

How do you maintain your career while being a mom?

I think the fact that I worked on my last TV series all throughout my first pregnancy until about 35 weeks and started back to work when my daughter was 3 and a half months old helped me adjust to being a working mum from the get go. But I did have to get much better at creatively managing my time. This is still, and probably always will be, a work in progress. Especially now having a toddler AND a new baby! I foresee some studying while breastfeeding, in random locations, at random times!

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Change Theo.  Breastfeed Theo.  Make coffee!

You feel sexiest when…

Getting dressed in something sexy + pretty is nice, but only if I already feel happy and confident within myself. It also helps to not be around screaming children.

How do you keep the fire alive and burning (but not at both ends!)?

That is for sure a challenge with young kids and babies! It’s hard for me as I’m not good at asking for help and getting a sitter. I want to spend all the time I can with my kids, especially while they’re young and at home, not away at school all the time or with friends…yet! But it’s super important for my fiancee and my’s relationship to have our one on one time, so we made a plan to have a weekly date night which is SO nice and needed! I also like to do things together that we used to do before we had the babies. It helps us remember that we are still our own people with our own identities and not just “mum and dad”.

All-time favorite mama hack?

Hmmm, that one is always changing! Currently I’m pretty amped about the fact that I’ve been able to convince my 2 and a half year old that “green juice” (Sunfood’s Sun Is Shining green powder mixed with water) is “so yummy”! Truly reminds me of the influence I have as a parent. How I act and react to not just food, but everything. My daughter wants to be like me and do what I do, so I try (operative word TRY!) to be the best version of myself not only for me, but for her to follow.

Ideal day with your little monsters?

A super simple day: A family day with NO plans, or work, or school, or errands, or phones! Just all of us hanging out, making food, dressing up, playing outside, swimming, reading books, playing board games etc. It probably includes my daughter’s current favorite activity of playing dress-up (we all are given characters by her to play).

Any epic #momfail moments that standup?

Recently I gave my daughter two really pretty, super sparkly princess dresses to play dress up in for Christmas. She fell in love with them immediately and I only realized the next day that they left glitter EVERYWHERE. I started limiting where in the house she could wear them…eventually hiding them! She was not a happy little lady. However, I have since found and purchased new NON glitter dress up dresses! YAY! p.s. whoever invented glitter should be exiled. (joking! but omg…glitter is the worst!)

You’re stuck on a deserted island and you can only bring one thing for yourself and one for your babes…what do you bring?

For me — a tent. I was going to say my phone, but I’d have no power so shelter it is! For the babes — a children’s book. Right now it would be Alice in Wonderland. Vera is a total bookworm and Theo likes listening :).
