MILF: This Little Wandering’s Kayla Petering on raising a family in a remote Colorado cabin + those damn pregnancy cravings!

Kayla Peterson didn’t set out with the intention of blogging. But after moving into a remote Colorado cabin (see Pinterest home porn below!), Instagram became the place to connect with other new mamas going through the same ups and downs of early parenthood. Two and a half babies and nearly 200,000 followers later, she’s established an amazing community of people who share her everyday wins and #parentfails, tiny shoeless feet included.

Q: Where did you grow up?
A: Oh gosh that’s complicated! My dad was in the military so we moved all over. We ended up in Colorado which is where I would say I grew up. I was actually born in Alaska, which I love, and I want to take the girls back there sometime.

.

Q: Cabin life GOALS! How did you decide to start your home + fam in a cabin in Colorado?
A: That is also complicated! We actually started with a home in Denver and then sold it while we were pregnant with Jessamyn. We converted a school bus into a tiny home that we traveled in for a while, but we decided it didn’t meet all of our needs. From there, we moved into an apartment and had our second daughter, Ophelia. We knew owning a home was something we wanted but the housing market was out of control. The cabin was something we did so we could live within our means while also having a home in a location we wanted. Right now, we live in the cabin half the week and spend the other living in a converted school bus.

.

Q: You’re pregnant with your third! Has this pregnancy been any different than your previous two?
A: I am! I would have to say it has been about the same…. I’ve had very similar cravings this time (salty food, avocado, and lemonade). I’ve also had similar aches and pains. The one big difference is that I have less time to think about these kinds of things this time around and I feel about ten times more exhausted. The girls are super excited about having a baby and I love that! This time around it has been way more fun because Jessamyn especially has been so into everything to do with the baby!

Q: How did you become a blogger? Tell us your journey!
A: Becoming a blogger actually wasn’t intentional! I initially started with Instagram just as a desire for a community, we had just moved and I didn’t really have any friends. I started by just posting photos of Jessamyn and the things in our day to day life. If you scroll back far enough on my feed you can find a lot of those early photos. I just grew from there and the blog was a way to document our life more intentionally. I have never actually introduced myself as a blogger because it was never about becoming one. It was more about finding community and sharing this experience of life and motherhood with others.

.

Q: Any challenges of being a blogger?

A: My biggest challenge is that I don’t know a thing about SEO and I can’t even pretend that I do! BUT that just goes to show you don’t necessarily have to have all the training to be a “blogger”. You just have to share and be authentic and you can figure the rest out as you go!

.

Q: Best piece of business advice you’ve received? Best parenting advice?

A: Oh man that is tough! Business wise, I would say the best and most relevant piece of advice that I constantly receive is to not undervalue myself and what I have to offer. I feel that especially in the social media world it’s easy to do but it’s SO important to know your value and not sell yourself short. As far as parenting, the thing I like to remember is that no one knows what they are doing and every family is unique. There isn’t a right or a wrong answer when it comes to parenting, it’s just what works best for you and your family.

.

Q: If someone only knew you from social media, how would they view you versus if they could see the reality behind the scenes. What would they see instead?

A: They would probably just see a normal, boring human being who does all the same things they do. We are all just human and doing our best! My husband always jokes that when we meet people from Instagram in real life, they think we are boring and he is probably right! At least for me, I am a major introvert so any real life meeting is probably going to be awkward! I love meeting people from Instagram but there is definitely an awkwardness to me that maybe doesn’t translate via my content online.

.

Q: Any epic #momfail moments that stand out?

A: I mean I’ve had all the blow outs, tantrums, and moments in public. I am pretty sure we are that family who always looks like a mess. But I mean, we get through it and most of our moments are good ones so I will take it! One time we went to the airport and realized we brought Jessamyn barefoot, so there was that! I thought Ben grabbed shoes when he put her in the car but he thought I had them so she flew barefoot!

.

Q: Favorite local store?

A: Most of the small shops I love are online, probably because our cabin is so remote. My favorite shop ever right now is Cocoa Chispa and I would fill the cabin with their mugs if I could.

.

Q: Favorite local restaurant?

A: Pure Kitchen in Frisco, seriously the best food and fresh juice ever! Though to keep it real, their kids menu has hot dogs which is mostly why we go so the girls can get their hot dog fix.

.

Q: Favorite local kid’s activity?

A: There is a train playground in Breckenridge that is our favorite ever. We probably spend like half the summer there. In the winter, there are ice castles in Dillon that are pretty awesome, the girls are obsessed with finding Elsa there.

.

.

Q: 3 things you can’t live without?

A: My camera, running shoes, and kombucha.

.

Q: What makes you feel sexy?

A: Taking a shower… just kidding! But honestly when you have spent half the week living in a school bus, a good shower can definitely up your confidence and how sexy you feel. Honestly, just spending time with my husband and having date nights is important as far as feeling connected for me!

.

Q: Fave womenswear brands?

A: Patagonia, Anthropologie, and Linen Fairytales, which is a small shop on Etsy that I love.

.

Q: Fave kid’s brands?

A: Louise Misha, Wild Wawa, and Chasing Windmills Kids.

.

Q: Fave Wandering Life moment so far?

A: We are actually leaving on a trip next month that I think is going to be the best moment we have ever had! But probably any of our trips to Seattle. When Ben and I were engaged, we drove to Seattle and slept in the car the whole way to save money, it was so fun! We have gone back every year since, although now we book hotels and fly but it has been so fun taking the girls. We are completely Seattle obsessed!
